"Killing The Dragon" (2002)

Killing the Dragon is Dio's ninth studio album.
It was released May 21, 2002 through
Spitfire Records and was produced by frontman
Ronnie James Dio. In an interview on Uranium,
Dio stated that the "dragon" of the album title refers to technology.

He expressed concern with it threatening society in the future.
Dio elaborated that the title track refers to
"those who perpetrate injustices and what
the world is doing to stop them.

In fantasy tales,
dragons were notorious for stealing children and
feeding them to their babies.
The second part is about a cruel feudal lord.

The third part is about 'electronic serfdom.
"It is a small god with an electrical heart.
Killing the Dragon introduces guitarist
Doug Aldrich to the band. Previous guitarist,
Craig Goldy,
co-wrote some of the songs before leaving the band.

The song "Push" was a hit and had a music video
that featured Tenacious D performing
A
humorous cover of Ronnie James Dio's
biggest song from his time with Black Sabbath,
"Heaven and Hell"

Dio approaches them to tell them
that he will pay them to play Tenacious D music.
Apparently, according to an interview with
Dio in 2005, during filming of this music video.

Ronnie James Dio became friends with Tenacious
D
frontman Jack Black, who told
Dio about his plans to make
A
Tenacious D film and asked him
to perform in the film if anything became of it.
This film is Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny.

The video was directed by Bill Schacht
(who has directed other videos for Alice Cooper,
Amon Amarth, Sister Sin, Yngwie Malmsteen, Saxon, etc.)
for Aestheticom.

It is a concept album and
it was released on March 21, 2000, through Spitfire Records.
A 2007 re-release puts Magica together with

who also has performed on Dio's album Dream Evil
and in the later release Master of the Moon.
Magica also features Jimmy Bain on bass,
Simon Wright on drums, and Scott Warren on keyboards.

Band leader Ronnie James Dio
produced this concept album.
The album was originally planned
to be the first part of
a trilogy of concept albums,
and shortly before beginning his tour
with Heaven & Hell,

Dio announced that he planned to start the Magica II & III album
after the tour's end, but he died shortly after of stomach
cancer on May 16, 2010. The only song released from
Magica II & III was titled "Electra".

The album may be re-issued with bonus tracks.
Dio guitarist Craig Goldy stated in a recent interview
"We were working on tracks for a new
DIO album just before Ronnie died in May.

And we did almost finish one song. Wendy
( Dio, Ronnie's widow/manager )
has been talking about reissuing
'Magica' album (originally released in 2000)
with bonus tracks, including this one."

Goldy goes on to say of the lyrics,
that they were written by Dio when he was fighting cancer,
and are "very emotional" and "hard to listen to
without a lump at the back of your throat".

"Sacred Heart" (1985)

Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart is Dio's third studio album. It was released in 1985 on Warner Bros. Records. This album peaked at #29 on the Billboard 200. The cover art is done by Robert Florczak.

The RIAA certified Sacred Heart Gold (500,000 units sold) on October 15, 1985. It was for a long time the last album to receive this certification, until The Very Beast of Dio was certified gold on November 3, 2009.

The accompanying stageshow was a spectacle involving a mechanised dragon and laser effects, as captured on video (and later DVD reissue). Ronnie James Dio and his band referred to the dragon as Denzil (although originally it was called Dean).

Sacred Heart is one of Dio's most well-known albums, including hit singles such as Sacred Heart, Rock N' Roll Children and Hungry For Heaven. The inscription around the border of the cover is in Latin and reads FINIS PER SOMNIVM REPERIO TIBI SACRA COR VENEFICVS OSTIVM AVRVM.

Because of the lack of punctuation it is difficult to determine the precise meaning, but a possible rendering is I learned of your goals through dreams: a sacred heart, a wizard, a golden door.

But several other meanings are possible.[citation needed] Another meaning could be contained within the lyrics to the song "Sacred Heart". "Whenever you dream you're holding the key, it opens the door to let you be free, and you find the sacred heart"; and "Here we see see the wizard, staring through the glass, and he's pointing right at you". It may be a loose interpretation of those lyrics.

This was the last Dio album to include guitarist Vivian Campbell, who went on to join several other bands, most notably Def Leppard, Riverdogs, Whitesnake, and Thin Lizzy .
Hungry for Heaven appeared in the Vision Quest movie.

"Holy Diver" (1983)

Album  : Holy Diver

Holy Diver is the debut album from American heavy metal band Dio.
Released on May 25, 1983, the album has been hailed by critics as Dio's best work and a classic staple in the heavy metal genre.

The album was eventually certified Gold in the US on September 12, 1984 and Platinum on March 21, 1989. In the UK, it attained Silver certification (60,000 units sold) by the British Phonographic Industry, achieving this in January 1986, at the same time as The Last in Line.

The original vinyl release had a photo-montage LP-liner, with images from both Rainbow and Black Sabbath days. The album was remastered and re-released by Rock Candy Records in 2005.

The only notable addition to the original album is an audio interview with Ronnie James Dio. Tracks 10-19 on the 2005 edition are Dio's answers to various questions about the album.

The questions are not posed during the interview itself, but can be found inside the CD's booklet instead. The B-sides to the singles, most of them live, remain generally unavailable on CD. Some were included in a limited-edition Japanese CD box set.
